Abstract

The promotion of improved dual-purpose crop varieties is one of the alternatives to
address the low availability of forage, particularly during the dry season, and to
strengthen farmers' resilience. The objective of this study was to evaluate the
agronomic performance and nutritional value of forage from three improved sorghum
varieties and three cowpea varieties, all dual-purpose. Trials were conducted with 27
farmers in the municipality of Korsimoro. The evaluated parameters were grain yield,
forage biomass yield, and the nutritional value of the forage. Sorghum straw yields
ranged from 1555.18±1006.24 to 2465.48±1024.28 kg/ha, with the ICSV 1049 variety
producing the highest yield. For grains, the highest yield was observed for the Sariasso
16 variety (1091.22±533.32 kg/ha). The yields of cowpea in both hay and grains
showed similar results, with values ranging from 533.91±254.32 to 628.46±480.47
kg/ha for grains and from 927.1±715.38 to 1082.3±889.44 kg/ha for hay, without
significant differences between varieties. For cowpea, grain and hay yields did not
vary significantly. Chemical analyses of sorghum and cowpea forage showed that the
contents of dry matter and total nitrogen were relatively low, requiring
supplementation to optimize animal nutrition. Cowpea hay showed higher levels of
crude protein, making it suitable for feeding dairy cows, although supplementation
with coarse forage is recommended.
