Reproductive performance of local hens and their crosses with exotic cocks in an extensive rearing system in the suburban area of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

Using crossbred hens in extensive breeding systems in Burkina Faso raises important
questions about their reproductive performance and maternal instinct compared with
local hens. This study evaluated the reproductive performance and maternal
behaviour of crossbred and local hens in extensive systems to determine whether
crossbreeding enhances productivity. A total of 30 hens representing six genotype
groups were monitored over a production cycle in an extensive rearing system. The
six groups included local hens and hens resulting from crosses between local hens
and Brahma, Sasso, ISA Brown, Harco, or North Holland Blue cocks. The
assessment focused on egg laying, brooding, and chick management. Results showed
that crossbred hens started laying earlier than local hens (20.6–22 weeks versus 25
weeks). On average, they produced 9–13.4 eggs per clutch, compared with 7.8 for
local hens, though this difference was not statistically significant. However, hatching
and chick survival rates for crossbred hens (51.85–75.47% and 50–78.57%,
respectively) were lower than those of local hens (82.05% and 90.62%). In contrast,
the average number of chicks surviving to one month of age did not differ
significantly, ranging from 3.2 to 5.6 for crossbreds and 5.8 for locals. Overall,
crossbreeding does not provide clear benefits in extensive systems and may pose a
risk to the sustainability of local hen populations.
