Artificial reproduction of African catfish is essential for optimizing fry production. The conventional protocol involves hormonal induction of gamete maturation in both males and females. However, hormonal stimulation of males is increasingly omitted, although this practice may impair milt quality, with effects varying according to the type of hormone used. The present study aimed to compare the reproductive performance of African catfish males treated or not treated with the synthetic hormone Ovulin. Artificial breeding trials were conducted using females induced with Ovulin at 0.5 ml/kg, paired either with males also induced with Ovulin at 0.25 ml/kg or with non-treated males. The results showed no significant effect of hormonal treatment on gonad weight or gonadosomatic index (p > 0.05). In contrast, hormonal induction of males significantly improved reproductive performance (p < 0.05). Fertilization and hatching rates of 91.86% and 77.91%, respectively, were recorded in hormonally treated males, whereas substantially lower fertilization and hatching rates of 55.14% and 21.83% were observed in non-treated males. These findings highlight the importance of inducing male gamete maturation, alongside female induction, to optimize the efficiency of artificial reproduction in African catfish.
