In cotton production, the choice of cultivars to be promoted considers
stakeholders needs in the value chain: producers, ginners, buyers/users of the
fibre. The objective of this study was to evaluate agronomic performances of
four cotton hybrids compared to national varieties, with the aim of their
eventual release in Burkina Faso. Trials were conducted during two
consecutive rainy seasons in six locations, representative of the cotton
production area. Trials were laid out as a randomized complete bloc design
with four replications. Results revealed that all evaluated hybrids are deficient
in fibre percentage compared to the controls, an important characteristic in
cotton production in Burkina Faso. Two hybrids C571 and C577 are early
maturing than the controls in terms of first reproductive branch insertion (< 6
nodes) and days to flowering and boll busting (< 62 and 104 days after sowing,
respectively). These two hybrids also had the best boll weight (+ 0.10 to+ 0.28
g over controls) and are the best yielding (+ 327 to + 347 kg/ha over controls).
For their eventual promotion, it is necessary to evaluate difference between
yield gain and fibre lost; evaluate comparative fibre quality, register the
hybrids in the national catalogue and sensitize stakeholders on cotton hybrid
technology, its use and seed production at the national level.
