Abstract

Burkina Faso is seeking to increase its domestic wheat production in order to reduce its dependence on imports. However, this effort can contribute to food security only if post-harvest losses are controlled. The susceptibility of the DIRE 15 wheat variety to the main stored-grain pests remains insufficiently documented, making it difficult to develop appropriate storage strategies. The present study aimed to evaluate its susceptibility to Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky, 1855) and Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius, 1792). Laboratory trials were conducted to determine, for each species, the average development time, production of first-generation adults, perforation and weight loss rates, frass production and the Dobie susceptibility index. The results show that S. zeamais develops more rapidly than R. dominica, with an average duration of 40.80 days versus 50.73 days, and produces more first-generation adults, namely 274.2 versus 146.0. In contrast, R. dominica causes the most severe damage, with perforation and weight loss rates of 10.80% and 3.98%, respectively, and frass production of 3.11 g, compared to 6.48%, 3.06%, and 0.48 g, respectively, for S. zeamais. The DIRE 15 variety is highly susceptible to S. zeamais and susceptible to R. dominica. DIRE 15 is therefore vulnerable to both pests and requires appropriate conservation measures to limit postharvest losses.
