Cattle feeding in pastoral and agropastoral systems relies on the use of natural pastures and crop residues. However, these forage resources show significant seasonal and spatial variability, which affects their availability and quality. Feeding behaviour and zootechnical performance are influenced by this variability. Understanding the animals’ feeding behaviour and intake on pasture is essential for improving pasture use and guiding strategic herd feeding management. The aim of this study is to characterise the feeding behaviour and voluntary intake of lactating cows on two types of grazing areas: Classified Forest and fallow land. The study was conducted on the outskirts of Bobo-Dioulasso, at Dinderesso (Classified Forest) and at the Farakoba station (fallow land). The methodology consisted of characterising the grazing areas through floristic analysis, assessment of available biomass, grazing value indices, and monitoring cows’ feeding behaviour through direct observation. Intake was estimated based on grazing time and bite weight.
The results show a total grazing value of 90.66% and a quality index of 64.71% on the fallow land. Average daily intake in the forest is significantly higher (192.28 g DM· kg⁻¹ BW0.75) than on fallow land (152.82 g DM· kg⁻¹ BW0.75). Despite similar grazing times, forage availability and quality influenced the level of intake. These results provide useful information for planning supplementation strategies.
