Causes and impacts of agroforestry parkland degradation in the context of internal population displacement in Western Burkina Faso

Abstract

Internal population movements affecting rural communities are reshaping the
management of agroforestry parklands, which constitute the dominant land-use
systems in western Burkina Faso. This study, conducted in three host villages for
internally displaced persons (IDPs) (Bama, Banakélédaga and Farako-Bâ), aimed to
improve knowledge of the degradation status of agroforestry parklands in these
localities. A mixed-method approach was adopted, combining semi-structured
interviews with seven local authorities and individual surveys involving 183 farmers.
Data were collected to document farmers' socio-cultural characteristics, the perceived
causes of agroforestry parkland degradation, and the categorization of their impacts
on parkland components. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and one-way
analysis of variance (ANOVA) with IBM SPSS Statistics. The results showed that
fuelwood cutting, livestock roaming, bushfires, and scarcity of useful plants were
among the main reported causes of agroforestry parkland degradation. These factors
were perceived to affect the woody, annual crop and animal components of
agroforestry parklands, as well as their overall functioning. To cope with these
constraints, local communities developed several adaptation strategies. The most
frequently reported were bushfire prevention (100%), local land conflict management
(85.03%), lack of technical support (81.20%), departure of young labour (77.10%),
and protection of plantations (68.79%). These findings highlight the importance of
strengthening local governance and supporting sustainable management practices to
enhance the resilience of agroforestry parklands in host communities.
