Abstract

Agriculture in Burkina Faso faces soil degradation and climate variability, which
reduce the productivity and profitability of smallholder farms. Developing
agricultural technologies that are both agronomically and economically efficient is
therefore essential. This study aims to evaluate the performance of maize-cowpea
intercropping under different tillage methods and fertilization levels in a smallholder
farming environment. Tests were conducted using a randomized controlled trial
design, with each block corresponding to a single farm and serving as a replication.
Four treatments (technologies) were evaluated, including plowing (TS2) or ridge
ridging (TS3), a cropping system consisting of alternating one row of maize and
cowpea (SC1) or two rows of maize and cowpea (SC2), and fertilization (F4). The
data collected concerned yield parameters and economic profitability, with gross
margin and the profit/cost ratio (PCR) as indicators. The TS2-SC2-F4 technology
generated a significantly higher haulm yield (1631.33 kg ha⁻¹), while straw yields
(3914.92 to 4104.67 kg ha⁻¹) did not differ significantly between the technologies.
Maize grain yields (1060.74 to 1339.27 kg ha⁻¹) and cowpea seed yields (261.55 to
399.56 kg ha⁻¹) remained similar across the technologies. All evaluated technologies
proved profitable, with TS3-SC1-F4 achieving optimal performance, characterized by
the highest gross margin (421,539 FCFA) and a return on capital (ROC) of 1.37. The
combined evaluation of agronomic and economic performance allows for the
identification of the most efficient technologies under real-world production
conditions.
