During heat stress, meeting the nutritional requirements of laying hens is crucial.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of simultaneously incorporating oil
and salt into the feed ration of laying hens in Bobo-Dioulasso, with the aim of
improving their welfare and production performance during heat waves. Using a
randomized Fisher block design, 160 ISA Brown hens aged 23 weeks were allocated
to either a control treatment (CT) or a treatment consisting of 1% cottonseed oil in
the feed combined with 0.25% sodium chloride in the drinking water (COSCT). The
experimental period lasted 12 weeks following an adaptation phase. Average ambient
temperature and humidity in the henhouse were 31.5 °C and 51.9%, respectively.
Mean rectal temperature of CT hens was significantly higher than that of COSCT
hens (p < 0.05). Average laying rate was 40.2% for CT and 37.9% for COSCT (p <
0.05). However, egg weight and volume were significantly higher in COSCT (51.7
g and 47.9 cm³) compared with those of the CT (50.2 g and 46.8 cm³) (p < 0.05).
Although the treatment did not improve egg production, it resulted in eggs of superior
physical quality. Future studies could explore other supplementation materials and
higher inclusion rates to optimize both productivity and egg quality.
