Abstract

Fish fauna is threatened by the combined effects of climate change and human activities. The growth in the number of hydroelectric dams on rivers amplifies these threats. Very little data exists on the impact of dams on the country's fish fauna. This study was initiated to provide useful information on fish fauna after the construction of the Souapiti dam with a view to its sustainable management. Water samples were collected between March and July 2024 for physicochemical analysis. Using gillnets with different mesh sizes (10 mm, 20 mm and 30 mm), fish samples were collected at four (04) study stations in the estuary during the same period. The physical and chemical parameters of the estuary waters were favourable for the development of fish fauna. Twenty-one (21) families of fish divided into 28 genera and 35 species were found in the estuary after the dam was built. The most dominant families are Carangidae, Sciaenidae, Ariidae, Cichlidae, Claroteidae, Belonidae, Cynoglossidae, Mugilidae and Polynemidae. Compared to the first study, which reported forty-one

(41) species, there has been a decrease in species richness of six (6) species, although ten new species have been identified. The results obtained will serve as reference data for fisheries managers in implementing appropriate measures for better monitoring and sustainable exploitation of aquatic resources in the estuary.
