In Côte d’Ivoire, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) cultivation is subject to high pest
pressure, leading to intensive use of synthetic insecticides. Although effective, these
products raise environmental and health concerns, thereby justifying the search for
sustainable alternatives. This study evaluated the effectiveness of wood vinegars as
insect-repellent agents and biostimulants under open-field conditions in
Yamoussoukro. Two wood vinegars (V1 and V2) were applied at three dilutions
(1:100, 1:200, and 1:300) and compared with a synthetic insecticide (K-Optimal 35
EC) and an untreated control. The results showed that V2 at the 1:100 dilution
completely suppressed insect attacks (0.00%), with an efficacy comparable to that of
the chemical insecticide. In addition, V2 at the 1:200 and 1:300 dilutions significantly
improved vegetative growth, particularly collar diameter (13.56 mm) and leaf area
(1453.79 cm²), indicating a marked biostimulant effect. Treatments with wood
vinegars doubled tomato yield compared with the untreated control (14.17–19.54 t/ha
versus 7.62 t/ha), although yields remained lower than those obtained with K-Optimal
(32.92 t/ha). Conversely, wood vinegars significantly extended the post-harvest shelf
life of fruits (21–25 days), compared with the control (7 days) and the synthetic
insecticide (15 days). These findings confirm the potential of wood vinegars as
promising agroecological inputs, whose effectiveness is closely dependent on
concentration and application practices.
