This study assessed cotton producers’ perceptions of jassid (Amrasca spp,)
infestation, its effects on farm performance, and the perceived effectiveness of
recommended insecticides and endogenous management practices. A structured survey was conducted with 215 cotton producers across the municipalities of Houndé,
Béréba, Koumbia, Bama, Toussiana, Padéma, Djigouèra, and Kourouma. The
surveyed population was characterized by a low level of formal education (54,9%)
and a predominance of producers under 50 years of age (69,8%). Results indicated
that 87% of producers associated jassid infestation with reductions in cotton yield and
farm income, while 82,3% identified jassids as a major production constraint. In
response, 97,8% of producers reported the use of insecticide applications. Ten
synthetic insecticides belonging to seven chemical classes were identified. Their
efficacy was perceived as high by 53,5% of producers, whereas 40% rated it as
moderate. Endogenous management practices, mainly early sowing and regular
weeding, were adopted by 32% of producers. Overall, the findings demonstrate the
significant pressure exerted by jassids on cotton production systems and underscore
the need to strengthen integrated and sustainable jassid management strategies
tailored to local farming conditions.
