Abstract

The issue of soil fertility in urban and peri-urban areas, exacerbated by the excessive
use of expensive and polluting chemical fertilizers, calls for sustainable alternatives.
Poultry manure, given the potential of the Burkinabe poultry sector, could offer a
viable solution. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of different poultry
manure application rates, in combination with mineral fertilizers, on tomato
productivity in a semi-urban area of Burkina Faso. To this end, a field experiment was
conducted using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications
and six treatments. T0: Absolute control (no input), T1: Poultry manure alone, T2:
300 kg/ha NPK + 100% urea, T3: 300 kg/ha NPK + 50% urea + 50% poultry manure,
T4: 300 kg/ha NPK + 25% urea + 75% poultry manure, and T5: 300 kg/ha NPK +
100% poultry manure. The full urea dose was 100 kg/ha. Soil chemical parameters
and tomato yield were evaluated. Results showed improvements in soil carbon
(0.76%), cation exchange capacity (CEC, 7.23 Cmol.kg⁻¹), and total nitrogen (0.68%)
with treatment T5. Treatment T1 increased available potassium (145.63 mg/kg) and
sodium (0.154 Cmol.kg⁻¹) compared to T0 and T2. Treatments T4 and T5 also
enhanced fruit yield by 45.46% and 77.31%, respectively, compared to T2. This
research contributes to understanding the effectiveness of poultry manure as an
alternative to chemical fertilizers, although long-term studies on its physico-chemical
and biological impacts are still required.
