Evaluation of cotton hybrids introduced in Burkina Faso: case of fibre technology performances

In cotton production, le choice of cultivars to be promoted considers stakeholders
needs in the value chain: producers, ginners, buyers/users of the fibre. The objective
of this study was to evaluate fibre quality performances of four introduced hybrids
compare to varieties from Burkina Faso. Trials were conducted during two years in
six locations representative of the cotton production area. Results showed that all
hybrids presented significantly insufficient fibre tenacity and short fibre indices. In
fibre length, hybrids C567 and C571 was similar to FK37 but significantly below
FK64. Hybrid C577 presents a comparative advantage on all the local varieties for
fibre elongation. Hybrids C567 and C577 have better reflectance and yellowness,
then a better fibre whiteness than the varieties from Burkina Faso. For a way forward,
hybrids C571 and C577 offering agronomic and fibre technology assets, were
recommended for registration in the national catalogue and demonstration for
commercial production. It is also recommended to improve weaknesses of the
hybrids, eventually provides their transgenics versions.
