Determinants of adoption and perception of certified cowpea seeds in Burkina Faso

Sustained increases in agricultural productivity depend on an adequate supply of
quality seeds at the right time. The overall objective of this study was to contribute to
a better understanding of the factors influencing the adoption and perception of
certified cowpea seeds in Burkina Faso. To this end, a survey was conducted in nine
districts. The sampling procedure was purposive for the study areas and random for
the selection of farmers. A total of 481 cowpea producers were included, comprising
219 women and 262 men. The results showed an adoption rate of 71%, with
significant differences between the study areas. The study also revealed that subsidies
helped to mitigate disparities among different social strata. However, the
characteristics of the area, the production system, and production objectives remain
key factors in the adoption of certified seeds. The majority of producers surveyed
(60%) believe that certified cowpea seeds perform better than farm-saved seeds. The
determinants of perception are: the characteristics of the study area, the level of
education, gender, and field size. The results also showed that for 87% of producers,
cowpea production is primarily for commercial purposes, and 94% of them engage in
at least one supplementary activity. In addition to varietal improvement, the
determinants thus identified can serve as levers for increasing cowpea yields.
