In Burkina Faso, cotton is the main cash crop and contributes significantly to the
national economy and farmers’ incomes. This study analyzes the effects of climate
change on cotton productivity in the western cotton-growing zone. Climate data from
1994 to 2023 for the municipalities of Pâ, Solenzo and Soubakaniédougou, obtained
from the National Meteorological Agency of Burkina Faso (ANAM-BF), were
processed using Instat+, R and Kronostat. The results reveal high climate variability,
characterized by a decline in rainfall, alternating deficit and surplus years, early dry
spells and a continuous increase in temperature. Extreme rainfall events are also
increasing, despite an overall favorable rainy season. Climate–yield analysis shows
that this variability reduces cotton productivity, as rainfall deficits, dry spells and
high temperatures during flowering and boll formation lead to a decline in the number
of bolls and in yields. Climate projections indicate that by 2050, rainfall could vary
between –26% and +33% under RCP 4.5 and between –32% and +39% under RCP
8.5, with a temperature increase of 0.3 to 2.7 °C. By 2100, rainfall variations could
range from –30% to +44% (RCP 4.5) and from –36% to +67% (RCP 8.5), with
temperatures potentially reaching 6.8 °C.
These trends will intensify water and heat stress, thereby threatening the
sustainability of cotton production. They highlight the urgent need to strengthen
farmers’ capacities, promote climate-resilient agricultural practices, and develop
cotton varieties adapted to future climatic conditions
