Abstract

In Burkina Faso, wild crocodile populations are scattered throughout the hydrographic network. The aim of this study is to analyze Crocodylus suchus abundance, humancrocodile relationships and protection measures. To do this, six localities were visited between 2016 and 2018. We surveyed for crocodiles during the day first from 7-12 h and then again from 15-18 h, and at night from 19-23 h. Binoculars were used for remote observations and spotlights at night. Depending on the size of the sites and their accessibility, direct observations were made on foot or by canoe. This technique was supplemented by indirect observations, which consisted in locating signs of crocodile presence at the sites visited. Ethno-zoological surveys were carried out in the form of direct interviews lasting 15 to 20 minutes to analyze human-crocodile relations. A total of three hundred forty-five people were interviewed in six localities. The results show that high abundances of Crocodylus suchus are found in protected areas and localities where crocodiles are sacred. The ethno-zoological survey shows that crocodiles are sacred animals in several localities in Burkina Faso. Traditional beliefs play a very important role in the protection and distribution of Crocodylus suchus. Despite this protection, the crocodile faces several threats, mainly anthropogenic.
