Diet of Bagrus bajad in Ziga dam, Burkina Faso

Abstract

This study was carried out in the Ziga dam between mars and december 2010. The aim was to evaluate feeding habits of Bagrus bajad (FORSKÄL, 1775) in Ziga dam. Eighty-three (83) specimens of Bagrus bajad were collected from traditional fishing. The percentage of the Main Food Item (MFI %) was used to evaluated the diet of Bagrus bajad in Ziga dam. The Vacuity coefficient was 14,4%. Analysis of seventy-one (71) stomach’s containing showed that Bagrus bajad of Ziga’s dam has carnivorous habit. Fish was main prey (MFI% = 68,3%) . Insectes (MFI% = 78%) and shrimps (MFI% = 87,7%) Shrimps were secondary preys. Males, females and the different reproductive stages have the same feeding habits. Results of this study will contribute to better breeding of Bagrus bajad.
