Abstract

Burkina Faso remains one of the african countries facing food and nutrition insecurity. Despite multiple actions, agriculture is still unable to cover food and nutritional needs and to generate the necessary income for rural households. Market gardening can be an alternative to this situation. This study aims to determine the role of market gardening in improving the food and economic conditions of households in the Sourou Valley. Thus, a survey of 70 market gardening households allowed us to evaluate the share of market gardening income in the formation of total household income and in the acquisition of food. On the other hand, to determine the contribution of market gardening to the food status of households in terms of energy intake and dietary diversity. The results show that market gardening income accounts for 78% of total household income and that only 8,41% of this income is allocated to the acquisition of food products.
