Plants play an important role in human life. Through the diversity of uses for health, food and income, they contribute to the improvement of the livelihood of the population. This study aims to assess the different uses and economic importance of Combretum nigricans Lepr. ex Guill. & Perr. var. elliotii (Engl. & Diels) Aubrév., a woody species exploited by local populations in Burkina Faso. A total of 330 people were surveyed, including 300 in the riparian areas of the Dindéresso and Bahoun Classified Forests and 30 sellers of C. nigricans gum in five markets in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso. Ethnobotanical and economic parameters were assessed. Correspondence factor analysis was performed to establish the links between the organs and the domains of use of C nigricans. A total of 22 specific uses were identified and classified into six use categories, the most important of which are energetic (100%), medicinal (83.33%) and artisanal (61.67%). The gum is edible and is locally marketed. The results also showed that the exchange value of gum varies seasonally and that the average annual income generated per seller ranges from 9408 to 113674 FCFA. Further studies on the ecology, gum productivity and mode of propagation should be further explored for the domestication of the species.
