Abstract

Diabetes is associated with clinical complications that increase the risk for mortality. in Burkina Faso, data
on type 2 diabetes patients quality of life are scarce. The aim of this study is to describe quality of life of patients
living with type 2 diabetes in two major towns of the country. a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted
including patients followed by diabetologists. Patients were selected from both profit and non-profit public
health care settings from ouagadougou and Bobo-dioulasso was conducted. overall, 100 patients were included.
Socio-demographic and clinical information were collected by trained staff during face to face interview.
health-related quality of life (hRQol) was measured in a ten graded scale (10/10 meaning do not perfectly
live with the disease; 0/10 meaning « do not live perfectly with the disease »). Patient was considered unsatisfied
with his quality of life, when the score is < 5. a descriptive analysis was performed to explore the sample.
Then a multiple factor analysis was conducted to examine the relation between patient’s characteristics and
percieved quality of life. There are 52% (52) men and 61% (61) were more than 50 years old. overall, 39%
(39) patients were unsatisfied of their quality of life. Factors that contribute to the first dimension (explained
65.2% of the inertia) ) called «disease impact» were those describing type 2 diabetes impact on professional
(12.2%), economic (11.2%), social (9.4%) and family life (3.8%) of patient. The second dimension explained
27.37% of the inertia. Factors contributing to this dimension called « disease complications », were cardiovascular
(16.6%), nervous (12.5%), renal (11.2%), ocular (9.2%) and disease duration over 5 years (7.5%).
Type 2 diabetes has not only an impact on professional, economic, social and family life but also has clinical
complications that impair patient’s quality of life. a health promotion strategy focused on sensitization of
patient family, and health care accessibility strengthening could improve health status of type 2 diabetes patients.
