Abstract

The management of severe acute malnutrition remains a major health problem in developing countries including Burkina Faso. The latter is responsible for 30% of child mortality rates in the world. The purpose of this work is to describe the factors associated with mortality in the pediatric department at CHU-Y0. This was a retrospective study descriptive and analytical referred 506 children aged 6 to 59 months suffering from severe acute malnutrition, supported in the nutrition department al CHU-YO between Ouagadougou 1st January 2010 and 31 December 2013. We used Cox regression to identify factors associated with mortality during hospitalization. The median age was 16 months [IQR = 10-24), the sex ratio was 1.3.

The mortality rate was 12.1 % or 0.6 deaths I100 person days. The presence of SAM with edema (adjusted Hazard Ratio (HRa) 2.20 [1.25 to 3.89]); HIV serology, those infected with HIV (HRa =   9.21 [4.85 to 17.49]), those whose HIV status was unknown (HRa = 6.80 (3.44 to 13.46)) and incomplete systematic treatment (HRa: 1.98 [1.11 to 3.54]) were significantly associated with SAM child mortality. The management and mastery of these associated factors remain a condition for improving the prognosis of severe acute malnutrition in our context.
