Nonbstetric vulvo-vaginal injuries in Souro Sanon University teaching hospital of Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso

To describe the nonobstetric vulvo-vaginal injuries received in an University Teaching Hospital. That was a retrospective and descriptive study, carried out from January, the 1st 2004 to December, the 31tb 2007. It took place at the Gynaecology emergency service of Souro Sanou University Teaching Hospital of Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. We included patients complaining of nonobstric vulvo-vaginal traumatic injuries and who were treated in our service during the study period. A total of 67 cases have been listed. Data were extracted from medical files and analysed with software Epi Info 6.0 Nonobstetrics vulvo-vaginal injuries represented 7.28 % of admissions registered in the gynaecological emergency's service. Patients were joungs (22 years old with extreme ages equal 2 and 49 years), house wives (83.5 %), city dwellers (59.7 %) and 61.5 % of women aged from 15 to 49 years old got married. Genital injuries were due to coïtus (58.2 %) with 10.4 % of non consensual coïtus, impalements (13.4 %), animals’ horns (9 %), and road accidents (7.5 %). Caustic tablets used for clandestine abortions and accidents at home were also incriminated (6 %). We recorded 86.5 % of vulvo-vaginal injuries, with 59.7 % of wounds located at the cul-de-sac of Douglas and 3 % of third degree tears of perinea. These wounds (95.52 %) were sutured under general anaesthesia. We transfused 4.5 % of patients.
Nonobstetrics vulvo-vaginal injuries are due to coïtus when the patient was an adult, and due to animals' horns and road accidents when she was a child or a teenager.
