Abstract

The first-consultation in the service of Nephrology and Hemodialysis in University Hospital Yalgado Ouedraogo (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso) bas been revised with a decline of ten years.

We conducted a descriptive retrospective study over 18 months. It included patients seen for the first time in nephrology consultation in one of the consultation post of the service. The clinical and laboratory data were 'collected from records of clinical observations.

Four hundred one patients (216 men and 185 women), mean age 45 ± 17 years were selected. The main reference pattern of these patients was renal failure (52.1 %). Serum creatinine was significantly higher among patients referred by physicians.  Hypertension was diagnosed in 63.6 % of patients The number of first-time consultants, and the frequency of arterial hypertension bas doubled in ten years. Patients referred by physicians had a mean serum creatinine significantly higher than other patients. There is certainly a problem in the reference time of patients. It seems appropriate, for better management of kidney disease, create a registry of renal failure, review the content of the health training schools and improve medical practices across the post universitary teaching.
