Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the practice of delivery on scarred uteri in reference hospitals in Burkina Faso. it was a 6-month descriptive prospective observational study that included all women with scar uteri who gave birth in 21 referral hospitals between May 2 and November 2, 2016. data was collected from clinical records, delivery and operating room registers, and analyzed with Stata software version.12. There were 21,751 deliveries, 2,061 of which were on scarred uteri and among them, 82.53 % of uni-scar uterus, 14.22 % bi-scar uterus and 3.25 % tri-scar or more. Cesarean section was performed immediately in 994 patients (48.13 %) and the main indications were the scarred uterus and the bone dystocia. a total of 79 % of women who met the criteria for trial of labor after cesarean section have benefited and among them, 70 % were successful. The causes of the failure of the trial of labor were mainly prolonged or obstructed labor, fetal distress, and eclampsia. We had one maternal death among the operated patients and 67 neonatal deaths. Clear guidance on the procedures for delivery of scar uteri should be implemented at the national level to guide health providers in the management of these cases from antenatal care to the delivery room.
