Abstract

This study was to evaluate the LLIN campaign on the coverage and use of mosquito nets, and fever related morbidity in Kaya’s households. It was conducted in Kaya Health and Demographic Surveillance System (Kaya HDSS) catchment area which includes seven urban sectors and eighteen surrounding villages. It
was a repeated cross sectional survey (2010 and 2011) on households, individuals and pregnant women. The data were collected using a questionnaire on PDA with CSPro and analyzed using SPSS and STATA 12. We have recorded a total of 4462 households in 2010 including 58.2% in urban areas and 5308 households in 2011 with 60.9% in urban areas. The individuals surveyed were 35916 in 2010 and 47601 in 2011. Insecticide-treated nets ownership was 50.53% in 2010 and 79.94% in 2011(p≤0,001). Nets utilization rate was 17.31% in 2010 compared to 46.27% in 2011 (p≤ 0,001). Fever related morbidity rate fell from 2.8 % in 2010 to 1.1% in 2011 (p≤0,001). The free distribution of mosquito nets has increased the availability and use of nets in households but the objectives of this campaign have not been achieved.
