A high number of geckos are found in houses. Geckos have established themselves as cohabitants of human populations in Burkina Faso. This coexistence often causes difficulties. The aim of this study was to highlight interactions between humans and geckos in the cities of Ouagadougou, Bobo Dioulasso and Ouahigouya.
A semi-structured questionnaire was developed in 2022 to gather information on the difficulties of cohabitation between humans and geckos. It was sent to residents of houses in which geckos had been sampled using a random-start systematic sampling method. Survey points were spaced at 2.5 km intervals to cover the entire area of the cities.
A total of 205 respondents were surveyed. All respondents (100%) stated that they were familiar with geckos, but the majority did not recognize gecko eggs. The main nuisances caused by geckos to human populations are noise (44.97% in Ouagadougou), which prevents sleep, and the gecko’s ability to transmit diseases (31.98% in Bobo Dioulasso and 35.86% in Ouahigouya). The measure taken by people (56%) in response to these nuisances is the elimination of the gecko. The methods used include sticks, shoes, powdered products and liquid chemicals. This interaction puts geckos at constant risk of death in houses. It remains essential to put in place a strategy to manage this conflict between humans and geckos.
