Prevalence of missed vaccination opportunities and associated factors in the urban area of Dogondoutchi, in southwestern Niger
Abstract
Introduction : Vaccination is one of the greatest advances in public health, but missed opportunities hinder its ability to prevent disease and constitute an obstacle to good vaccination coverage. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence and identify the factors associated with missed vaccination opportunities among children aged 0 to 23 months in urban areas in the Dogondoutchi health district.
Methods : This was a quantitative study conducted in the town of Dogondoutchi, Niger, in 2022. Children aged 0 to 23 months attending urban integrated health centers for curative or preventive care, accompanied by their mothers or caregivers over the age of 15 who consented to participate in the study, were included. The sample size was estimated at 200 children aged 0 to 23 months. Data were collected through interviews with mothers or caregivers of children aged 0 to 23 months upon leaving the health facility and through a literature review.
Results : The prevalence of missed vaccination opportunities was 47.1%. IPV-2, MMR-2, and IPV-1 had the highest number of missed opportunities, with respective prevalences of 60%, 33.3%, and 21.1%. The age of the children, the reason for the visit to the health center, and the messages learned about vaccination in the last month by mothers or caregivers were associated with missed vaccination opportunities (p < 0.05).
Conclusion : The lack of integration of vaccination activities and insufficient communication contribute to the high prevalence of missed vaccination opportunities.
