Antimicrobial resistance is nowadays a major public health threat. Surveillance of antimicrobial resistance is one of the key elements of Burkina Faso’s national action plan for combating this threat. We analyzed urine samples in this retrospective study to assess the carriage of Enterobacteriales and their antibiotic susceptibility.
A total of 566 urine samples were collected from January 01, 2020, to June 30, 2022, in the Nanoro health district to diagnose any urinary tract infection (UTI). Antibiotic susceptibility test was performed according to Kirby Kirby-Bauer method. The principle of action synergy was used to determine the extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL).
In total, 207 samples had confirmed UTI with two co-infections representing 209 isolated bacterial strains. The study revealed that Enterobacteriaceae were the main causes of UTIs, with a prevalence of 90.90%. Out of them, ESBL prevalence was 62,63% dominated by the genus Escherichia (70,58%), Klebsiella (12,60%), and Enterobacter (10,92%). The results of this retrospective study confirm the need for regular monitoring for better patient care management, which would contribute to alert decision-makers on the urgency of regulating any action or behavior that could contribute to the spread of antimicrobial resistance.
Key words: Urinary tract, Rural environment, Enterobacteriales, antibiotic resistance, ESBL
