Overview of pharmaceutical preparations in private pharmacies in the city of Bobo DioulassoAbstract
Making pharmaceutical preparations has long been the essence of the dispensing pharmacist's job. With the industrial revolution of the 21st century, industrially prepared medicines have replaced compounding on pharmacy shelves. Today, there is renewed interest in these preparations due to frequent drug stock-outs, the need to personalize certain drug treatments and the absence of drugs for the treatment of certain so-called orphan diseases. The aim of this study was to assess the state of implementation of pharmaceutical preparations in pharmacies in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso. It was a descriptive cross-sectional study that took place from May to August 2023 in all 63 private pharmaceutical dispensaries in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso, the economic capital of Burkina Faso. The results showed that only 33.33% of these dispensaries had a preparation room, and 23.81% carried out pharmaceutical preparations. Of the pharmacies that did carry out preparations, 26.67% performed magistral preparations only, 66.67% officinal preparations only, and 6.66% both types of preparation at the same time. Alcohol at 70° was the main officinal preparation made, while magistral preparations were mainly of the dermatological type. The reasons for not making pharmaceutical preparations were low demand, the fact that these preparations were made by local production units, the existence of pharmaceutical specialties, the absence of a preparation room, low economic profitability, lack of equipment due to acquisition costs, and difficulties in accessing raw materials.
