Epidemiological profile of intestinal and urinary schistosomiasis in school-aged children in the Hauts-Bassins region (Burkina Faso)
Abstract
Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease endemic to Burkina Faso which continues to cause serious public health problems. The objective of our study was to determine the epidemiological profile of urinary and intestinal schistosomiasis in the Hauts-Bassins regions of Burkina Faso. This was a cross-sectional study over a period of 04 months from June to September 2023 among participants whose age was between 6 and 15 years old. These patients came from 13 different sites (villages and/or schools) in the Hauts-Bassins region. A total of 832 participants were included in this study, including 51.80% girls and 48.20% boys. The sex ratio was 0.93 in favor of men and the most represented age group was that of children aged 6 to 10 years (55.88%). The prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis was 1.20% while that of the intestinal form was 8.41%. This study showed that the Hauts-Bassins region is an area where intestinal schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma mansoni prevails. Its transmission is always constant and its infestation spares no section of society. It is therefore essential to increase public awareness of good hygiene practices in order to limit the transmission of the disease.
