Introduction. In 2022, WHO estimated that over 1.5 billion people lacked access to basic sanitation, of whom some 419 million still defecated in the open air. The overall objective of this study was to assess household knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding sanitation and hygiene in the rural commune of Koubri.
Method. A mixed survey was conducted in 5 villages in the rural commune of Koubri from June 1 to 10, 2021. Quantitative data were collected from households via individual interviews, and qualitative data were obtained from married women and unmarried girls through 07 focus groups.
Results. The survey involved 167 households and 1,162 individuals. Our study showed that 69.46% of households have a latrine. In Koubri, 80% of respondents claimed to use latrines, while in the other sites over 40% of respondents still practiced open defecation. Latrine hygiene is provided mainly by women and girls. 62.87% of households have a system for washing hands after bowel movements. Full latrines were mainly managed by emptying by hand and closing the pit.
Conclusion. This study reveals a lack of latrines in all villages. Open defecation is also commonplace, with all its attendant consequences. It is important that action be taken to raise awareness of this problem.
