Context: Depression is a very common psychiatric disorder in somatic medicines. No study has evaluated the depression in the General Medicine Department of the Regional University Hospital of Ouahigouya.
Objectives and Methodology: It was for us, to study the epidemiological and clinical aspects of depression in hospitalized patients in general medicine. To achieve the objectives, we conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study from May 1st, 2018 to October 31st, 2018, six months, in the General Medical Department of the CHUR Ouahigouya. The short 13-item Beck questionnaire (BDI-13) was used to assess depression.
Results: Of the 200 patients who took part in the study, men were in the majority (51 %). The prevalence of depression was estimated at 79 %, with a moderate to severe depression estimated at 45.5 %. No statistically significant relationship was found between depression and sociodemographic characteristics or major somatic pathologies.
Conclusion: The prevalence of depression is very high among hospitalized patients in General Medicine of CHUR Ouahigouya. No significantly associated factors were noted in our study. This high prevalence of depression, testifies to the need for multidisciplinary care of patients through liaison psychiatry which should allow an adequate management of depression and thus improve the management of hospitalized patients in Medicine.
