Abstract

Introduction: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are serious and common adverse events in healthcare practices. According to the WHO, compliance with hand hygiene (HM) is the main means of combating HAIs and can be reinforced by a multimodal strategy.
Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study from March to April 2019 to evaluate hand hygiene promotion strategies at the Bogdogo University Hospital. Interviews, observations and document reviews were conducted to assess the five dimensions of the strategy. The data were privileged with all the caregivers of the Gynecology and Obstetrics department. A scoring grid was used for the analysis.
Results: The implementation of the strategy was deemed unsatisfactory with a score of 17.37% broken down into 13.71% for system change; 73.17% for training and education and 0% for evaluation and restitution of results; workplace reminders and incentives; and institutional safety culture. Hand hygiene compliance is also considered unsatisfactory with 18.19%. It was composed of 78.2% single wash and 21.8% FHA.
Conclusion: the implementation of the strategy is not satisfactory. All the characteristics of the strategy should be implemented to hope for an improvement in the observance of the practice of MH
