Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics of renal ectopia in hospital center in Côte d’Ivoire
in order to identify their particularities. This was a descriptive study with retrospective data collection in
hospitalized patients and / or received in consultation in the Nephrology Department of Yopougon University
Hospital in Abidjan between January 1991 and December 2015. The diagnosis of renal ectopia was made
at medical imaging in front of the presence of individualizable renal structure outside the high lumbar fossa.
We found 43 cases of renal ectopia out of 22197 patient records, a prevalence of 0.19%. The sex ratio was 1.5.
The average age of the patients was 35.4 years. The circumstances of discovery were represented by abdominal
pain (48.84%). It was mainly simple renal ectopia (95.35%) in the pelvic position (74.41%). Crossed renal ectopia was noted in two patients and bilateral ectopia in four including one case of horseshoe
fusion. One patient had a pelvic kidney associated with controlateral renal agenesis. Four cases of urological
abnormalities were observed. Uterine agenesis and testicular ectopy were the genital abnormalities
found. Complications were mainly chronic abdominal pain (83.34%) followed by recurrent urinary tract
infection (8.33%) and renal lithiasis (8.33%).
renal ectopia is a rare uro-nephrological entity in a hospital setting. Its characteristics in our study do not
differ from what is described in the literature. The risks inherent in the frequent pelvic position in this
work as well as the possibilities of urological complications justify early detection and preventive monitoring.
