Prevalence of hypertension and associated working conditions among workers of an energy production and distribution company in Bobo-Dioulasso

Introduction : Work, an indicator of social accomplishment, can alter the health capital of workers. Indeed, working conditions and stress can be a source of cardiovascular diseases including arterial hypertension. Objective : Our study aimed to determine the prevalence of arterial hypertension, as well as the associated working conditions among workers of an energy production and distribution company in Bobo-Dioulasso.
Materials and methods : This was a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study that took place from August 10 to October 26, 2020. Data was collected using a questionnaire and a clinical examination carried out during the annual medical examination of the company's workers. Binary logistic univariate and multivariate analyzes were done with Stata version 15 software.
Results : This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 181 workers were included in the study. The average age of the participants was 39,78 ± 9,21 years. The sex ratio was 5,24 men for one woman. 70,72% were field agents and the average seniority was 9 years ± 9,67 years. The prevalence of hypertension was 17,68%. The factors associated with the existence of hypertension were age (p = 0,001), obesity and overweight (p = 0,005), seniority at work (p < 0,001) and stress (p = 0,034).
Conclusion : The study showed that the workers of this company experience hypertension. In view of the factors associated with its occurrence, it is important for the employer to implement actions to prevent this pathology among its workers.
