The roots of Entada africana are used to prepare an improved traditional medicine called "SAMANERE® " used in
the management of jaundice syndromes and hepatitis. The growing harvest of the roots to meet the demand for
SAMANERE
may cause damage to the plant over time. This study was initiated with the aim of finding an
alternative to the roots in order to preserve Entada africana. The objective of the study was to make a comparative
evaluation of the hepatoprotective activity of the leaves, stem bark and roots of this plant.
The toxicity of the extracts has been determined on albino mice by sequential Oragnization for Economic
Cooperation and Developpement method. The hepatoprotective activity has been evaluated in rats with livers
damaged by CCl4.
The results obtained showed that the toxic doses of the three extracts are greater than 2000 mg/kg. Root and stem
bark decoctions showed a significand drop in transaminases compared in CCl4 control batch with respectively (63.83
%) and (61.36%) hepatoprotection according to the ALT values. The leaves exhibited moderate activity (42.93%
hepatoprotection).
Thus, in addition to roots, the stem barks can be used in the management of liver disease.
