Introduction: Shelling is an essential step in the process of processing cashew nuts.
Materials and methods: We carried out a descriptive cross-sectional study from October 1 to December 31, 2020.
It focused on the working conditions of shellers in a cashew processing company in Bobo-Dioulasso.
Results: Our study involved 249 workers exclusively female. The average age of the participants was 35,83 ± 8,87
years with an average professional tenure of 4,14 years. The nuisances to which the workers were exposed were
mainly contact with the CNSL, the adoption of awkward postures, repetitive movements and the risk of accidents.
One hundred and forty-two shellers (57%) had been victims at least once of a work accident. Dermatological manifestations were observed in 162 shellers (65,06%). Musculoskeletal disorders were found in 91 women (36,6%).
In terms of preventive measures, these workers all received a medical check-up and the PPE provided was not
suitable.
Conclusion: The shelling of cashew nuts exposes workers to many harmful effects, particularly chemical,
ergonomic and physical. It is therefore necessary to improve the working conditions of shellers by providing them
with suitable PPE and by training them in gestures and postures.
