L’édification de l’Etat-nation au Burkina Faso comme ailleurs est une entreprise collective à analyser dans la longue durée de l’espace burkinabè. Dans la mesure où l’Etat y a devancé la nation, la réalisation de son unicité est en permanence mise à l’épreuve par l’historicité de particularismes identitaires.
Comment concilier la vocation unificatrice et centralisatrice de l’Etat-nation avec l’existence d’une soixantaine de groupes ethniques ? Comment l’identité nationale en construction se conjugue-t-elle avec les « nationalités » parfois appelées « ethnies » ? Tel est le problème que la présente étude voudrait mettre en évidence. En effet, l’étude montre pour commencer comment des stratégies de massification ethnique et d’homogénéisation spatiale ont conduit à l’émergence de l’Etat territorial colonial : l’entité « Haute-Volta ». Elle analyse ensuite la trajectoire de l’Etat-nation que l’on s’atèle à construire dans les limites du territoire légué par le colonisateur. Au terme de cette étude fondée essentiellement sur les données archivistiques et bibliographiques, la conclusion suivante s’en est dégagée : la nation burkinabè en construction est une réalité mais celle-ci n’est jamais définitivement donnée. C’est pourquoi la pérennité de l’identité nationale dépend de façon peut-être paradoxale de la prise en compte des identités locales.

State-nation edification in Burkina Faso as elsewhere, is a collective work to be analysed within the long duration of burkinabe space. In so for as state has overtaken nation, the realization of its uniqueness is permanently challenged by the historicity of identity particularisms. How to conciliate the unifying and centralizing tradition of state nation with the existence of sixty ethnic groups? How can national identity on going construction be combined with “nationalities” sometimes called “ethnic groups”. This is the problem the present research would like to make obvious. Actually, the research shows first how ethnic massification strategies and spatial homogenization led to the emergence of colonial territorial state: the entity “Haute-Volta”. The research then analyses the trajectory of state-nation in construction in the limits of the territory left by the colonizer. At the end of the research based particularly on archive and bibliographic datas the following conclusion can be drawn: the burkinabe nation in construction process is a reality but this is never definitely won. This is why the timelessness of the national identity depends may be paradoxically on the taking into account of local identities.
