Dans le contexte actuel du développement socio-économique et sanitaire du Burkina Faso, la médecine traditionnelle occupe une place importante dans le dispo­ sitif de soins.

A partir d'entretiens avec les divers protagonistes, nous avons tenté de situer la place occupée par le thérapeute traditionnel dans les soins de santé mentale et d'ap­ préhender de manière subséquente les motivations des malades dans leur quête de guérison.

Les systèmes traditionnels d'interprétation de la maladie mentale en cours dans le contexte culturel de référence, conjugués avec les présupposés populaires sur la psychiatrie moderne, justifient pour une large part 1'engouement pour les soins tra­ ditionnels. Quelque soit le statut social du malade mental, son itinéraire thérapeutique passe toujours par le tradithérapeute.

However his social sta­ tute may be, the mental patient's itinerary always goes through the tradi-therapeutist.
