SELECTION ET EVALUATION D'ESPECES ARBUSTIVES POUR LA MISE EN PLACE DE BAIES VIVES DEFENSIVES AU BURKINA FASO

Dans l'objectif de réduire les coûts de protection des plantations et des aménagements agro-pastoraux en faisant usage de haies vives défensives, un programme de recherches a été conduit de 1983 à 1990 au sein du Ministère de L'Environnement et du Tourisme (M.E.T.) avec l'appui du Centre de Recherches pour le Développement International (C.R.D.I). Ces travaux ont permis (1) de sélectionner un premier groupe d'espèces arbustives, locales et exotiques, aptes à former des haies défensives, (2) d'identifier les modes de propagation les plus appropriés pour ces espèces, (3) de mettre au point des techniques d'implantation et de conduite des haies, selon les conditions de leur utilisation. Les premiers résultats ont déjà été vulgarisés auprès des paysans. L'arrêt des recherches en 1990 a laissé cependant en suspens certains aspects pour lesquels les investigations ont été ou continuent d'être menées par d'autres institutions de recherche et de développement.

In order to reduce the protection costs of tree plantations and agro-pastoral areas from livestock, a research program was designed to study the capacity of live fences to achieve this objective. The program was carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, with financial support of International Research for Developement Center (I.R.D.C./Canada). It focussed on (1) the selection of a preliminary group of suitable, local and exotic, shrub species, (2) the identification of appropriate propagation techniques for theses shrub species ; and (3) the adjustment of techniques for the esta­ blishment and management of live fences to the condition in which they are used. Results are already used by the farmers. The program was terminated in 1990. However, a number of questions were left unanswered and clearly deserve further investigations, done since this date by other research or development institutions.
