Abstract

Abstract

Introduction

Maternal and infant mortality remain a concern worldwide, especially in West African countries. Countries have implemented several strategies to reduce these deaths. One of these is the integration of maternal and child care. To be effective, this integration requires a number of conditions, including the availability of the products needed to care for the mother and child. This article assesses the impact of product availability on the provision of integrated care.

Methodology

The study was conducted in four health facilities in the Pô health district in Burkina Faso. It was essentially a qualitative cross-sectional study. The data collected through focus groups and interviews with providers, beneficiaries and key informants were recorded, transcribed into verbatim and then analysed using Nvivo 11. A thematic analysis along the various dimensions selected was carried out using a deductive approach.

Results

The availability of reproductive health products has made it easier to care for mothers and children. However, over time, stock-outs of certain products have hampered the integrated provision of care for mother and child. The probable reasons for this are poor stock management and the policy of free care. The pyramid system for supplying health products and the packaging of certain vaccines is hampering the integrated provision of care.

Conclusion

To ensure the optimum success of interventions, it is important to guarantee the permanent availability of products. To achieve this, stocks must be regularly and rigorously monitored.
