Drivers of rice production and consumption in the ten selected lowlands

Résumé

The results show that the average age of the respondents is 42 and approximately 67% of surveyed households’ heads are men. The average household size is 10 people, and each respondent is in charge of about 8 persons. More than half of farmers interviewed are illiterate (54%). About 78% of the sample is rice producers in improved low-land; while 34% of them are working in unimproved lowland. The results further indicate that about 12% of rice producers, in this study, are working on both type of lowland. An overwhelming majority of respondents (70%) are smallholders (farm size between 0 and 5 ha); the mean farm size, however, is about 4 ha. Also, 85% of the farmers belong to a social organization.
